Why West Isn’t the Best

VUP Media

Migrating west has been a popular choice for many looking to leave the colder climates within the U.S., but the game has changed in recent years. As it turns out, the west really isn’t the best place to live in the United States.
If you’re considering moving, Florida is the ideal option for relocation. It’s sunny and warm, but there are even more reasons why the Sunshine State ranks higher than the rest.

Cost of Living

Because Florida is such a beautiful, resort-like state, you might think it costs an arm and a leg to live here. The truth is, it’s cheaper on average to live in Florida than in western states like California. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, California’s cost of living is the second highest in the nation, whereas Florida doesn’t even make the top ten. So, if finances are a larger part of your decision-making process, set your sights on Florida.

Public transportation can be an important factor when deciding where to live – especially for those who don’t own a car. Many of Florida’s major cities have been ranked quite well for their public transit. California is typically not considered a “walking state” because attractions tend to be spread out, and many areas require a vehicle to get around. In Seattle, the dense population works against its residents with heavy traffic and the second worst evening commute in the country.
There are also a lot of Pedestrian Villages in Florida, which are close-knit neighborhoods designed to be entirely walkable. So you don’t necessarily need a car to get around in the Sunshine State, and no car means less personal property taxes.

Tax Breaks

Even if you do own a car, living in Florida comes with some significant tax breaks compared to other states. With Florida’s Homestead Act, you’ll enjoy lower property tax assessments if Florida is noted as your primary residence. Plus, Florida doesn’t have state income tax. Texas may not have an income tax either, but their property taxes, sales taxes, and corporate taxes make the state less attractive than Florida.
Residents of many states across the country are flocking to Florida, for not only the beautiful, sunny weather, the better way of life, and the cost of living, but for the recent tax changes effective in 2020. If you’re looking for a beautiful place to live without the extreme cost, set your sights on Florida rather than the West Coast. Not sure where to start?
